I'm hoping someone can explain something for me. For about a 5 months now
the
Automatic Update element of Windows Updates has not been working, I've tried
all sorts of methods of kick starting it but to no evail. The windows
update log file is not updating. Everything works fine for me when I
perform a manual update. I'm not exactly sure what the point of failure
could be, about 5 months ago I went to Broadband and installed Norton
Internet security 2003 but othe than this I cannot pin this one down. All
my services are up, any ideas - I can't seem to find anything/anyone who has
a similar issue.

hmm, if you have problems with your automatic Update since 5 month and
you have installed NIS2003 5 month ago it seems obvious that NIS is the
Problem, am I right ?????
Did you deinstall NIS and try without??? If the aU is working without
it's clear NIS blocks the aU accessing the Internet. (I think it does)
In NIS must be a possibility to see which program has wich permissions.
Check it out and look what permissions aU has got.

De-installed and re-installed NIS, I also checked the permissions for the
Windows Update programs and they have access, in any case Windows Update
works fine when I initiate it, ie I go to the www.windowsupdate.com.

Any other thoughts, I was hoping one of the MS guys may know?

I am having the same problem. Went to broadband about a month ago, and Auto Windows Update was still working OK. Updated my firewall software (ZoneAlarm) a few days ago, and now Auto Update does not seem to be working. I can download updates fine if I manually go to Windows Update, but the Auto client does not run.
I have checked that Auto Update is enabled and that the application has permissions in the firewall software, but nothing has worked yet.

I have the same problem. I changed to broadband about a month ago, and the Auto Windows Update still worked OK. I have since updated my firewall software (ZoneAlarm) and now Auto update won't run. I have checked that it is enabled, and the proper permissions have been set in the firewall software, but it won't start up again.

Updates work fine if I manually initiate them by going to the website.
