Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me?
I've got a 2003 Standard server, running SQL 2000 SP3a (with Reporting
Services), and BackupExec 9.1.
The Windows Update process seems to have gotten "partially" broken, with
these symptoms:-
Automatic Update:
According to the C:\Windows\Windows Update.log file, the process is
starting, checking for catalog data and shutting down again.

Alternatively, running Windows Update from the Start menu initiates an
IEXPLORE instance (visible in Task Manager), but nothing else occurs (the
mouse changes to hourglass briefly for a second or two, then goes back to
normal). I then have to terminate the process from task manager. Nothing
appears in the log file.
Alternatively, manually starting Windows Update by first opening IE, then
going Tools -> Windows Update does load the WU website and allows manual
scanning for updates, but the following problems occur:-
- Some hyperlinks do not work - e.g. link to the Windows Server 2003 section
on microsoft.com, or the "Read More" links against each update entry.
- Once the Install Now button is clicked, the download dialog appears, but
no download occurs - even after a couple of hours - it just sits there,
doing nothing.
To get past this and maintain the server I've had to resort to running the
scan to see KB numbers, then back on my workstation manually downloading the
hotfix by knowledgebase ID and manually applying.
The update log file entries look like this in this case:

I'd really like not to have to go back to this old way of doing things if I
can avoid it.
Is there a list of services I should check are running (e.g. BITS) for WU to
work? I have trieed re-installing the WU activex, but IE now doesn't list
it in the objects browser, despite it being re-installed.
I've set all the WU Microsoft websites I'm aware of to be trusted, so that
shouldn't be interfering...
I've tried replacing the WUAUCLT.EXE from original CD...
I'm most confused...
Thanks for any help offered.
