Windows Update no longer works after installing Spyware Doctor 6

I recently installed Spyware Doctor 6 on my PC and on restarting noticed that
Windows Automatic Updates no longer works. I get the following message...

Your computer might be at risk
Automatic Updates is turned off
Click this balloon to fix this problem

Although when I turn it back on it appears to be working, every time I
reboot it has been switched back off and I get the same error message. Also
whenever I try and access Windows Update (even after I've switched it back
on) the site will not function and I get the following error message (Error
number: 0x8DDD0018). I've visitied numerous help pages and forums that all
showed me different methods of turning automatic updates back on but it will
not switch on and stays as disabled. When I try to switch them on via the
services window I get the following message...

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I read up about many different spyware packages before installing Spyware
Doctor and only did so because it was rated so highly. Is there anyway to
fix my problem. Also why is Spyware Doctor causing this problem and if it
can't be fixed can anyone recommend any other spyware software. I've been
told SUPERAntiSpyware Professional and XoftSpySE 4.33 are both good, can
anyone confirm this for me.
