From Internet Explorer, I click on Tools, Windows Update,
and then get a screen that says "Checking for the latest
version of the Windows Update software...
Depending on your connection speed, this might take a
minute. During this time, you may receive one or more
security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure
that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software." Then nothing
else happens. I've waited hours. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue. Also tried KB312955 - to no
avail.

Hi

Please try the following:

1)
Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try WU site again.

2)
If it still doesn't work, see if this one helps:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site,
you see the 0x800A01AD error while looking for updates
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=13&ln=en

3)
If it still doesn't work, see if this one helps:

Go to
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from
or write to the database". Download and run it.

4)
If the above didn't work, you can remove (or rename) the
Softwaredistribution folder and see if it helps.

Follow step 2 here to do this:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=21&ln=en
