Not only have there been scores of post on this Newsgroup to this effect but
the reports to the same effect have been made in many Forums.

For the time being, until Microsoft admit there is a problem and fix it, do
NOT use Windows Update automatically, Turn updates onto notify, when
notified see what the update is for, if you do not need it block it for the
future, if you do need it go to the Windows download forum and download the
update manually, make a restore point, then install the update. If it fouls
up your system or fails to install properly use system restore to get your
system back and then block the update.

Always make a system restore point before installing updates, the Microsoft
update system is so unreliable they should have this done automatically as
they do for other updates and installations

Joe

You are OK, but thousands are having trouble since March.

I am NOT suggesting that users do not install updates, but that they do not
do it automatically. I am advising them to be cautious, at a time when all
Microsoft's efforts are bent towards getting Visa of the ground.

Many of my clients who auto updated Windows XP pro have had problems

Those who follow my advice can come to no harm, those who blindly install
every thing may, or the may be "Lucky Joe's"

right on. I recently took the trial that Microsoft offered for Office and
ended up buying the Home version. Unknown at time of purchase it did not
update Outlook, so what we have is updates for all except Outlook. Along
comes the update on April 10. and the updates for Outlook 2003 are hung up
and stop half of the other updates. It also corrupted XP and Explorer. Spent
4 houirs on the phone with the so called experts and it got worse not better.
Microsoft wont even let me upgrade to the standard addition that has outlook
because 45 days have just expired.
Clearly there sloppiness and no solution except to probably reinstall. So
beware the free gift of the update. It destroys rather than fixes.

Just a thought that the way out of your problem is to use System Restore to
go back to the point before your trial expired and upgrade from there. [Or
recover an earlier version form backup for the same purpose and reset the
day on your PC manually to do the upgrade.

Just in case you did not see this
post.............................................. .......

Well, after three other posts asking the question, I will assume that
"today"
Microsoft has no solution or remedy for the thousands and thousands of us
who
use Microsoft Update and want to go back to Windows Update. Again, before
any
other Microsoft reps reply to this post. I know how to do this manually on
one machine!! I need to do this on a domain!!!! And I don't want to have to
hire "temp" help to manually walk to over 500 machines and do this!!!
Look, I am not as upset about the problems that Microsoft update causes
because I know the fix but PLEASE, I'm not the only network admin out there
that is screaming because their domain is crawling!!!!
If I have to abandon updates entirely, I guess I will consider that option
since my employees are starting to hunt me down and I have ran out of places
to hide.
It is impossible for me to expect that from time to time there won't be an
update released that will cause problems on machines but PLEASE have a way
for all of to reverse it!! Is there a canned MSI file for Windows Update
that
I can use to push out to my crawling PC's?? HELP US MICROSOFT!!!!!!! I don't
want to go to Macs!!!!!!

Good advice, unfortunately a lot of damage has been done. I restored back to
April 5, but some problems caused by the update to XP itself linger. What is
more important is that the attempt to manually load and select the updates
get hung up and permanently freezes.
On top of that I'm still stuck with a purchase of Office Home 2007 which is
useless.
I agree with your analysis of the shortcomings, but Microsoft has to step up
to the plate and take the responsibility and certainly be flexible in product
upgrade of recent sales made with improper information.

GOOD SUGGESTION:

The following is a post I put in windowsxp.general:

Recently I had the need to do a system restore due to an issue with MS
updates being installed and possibly causing a problem.

Prior to the system restore the updates in question were in the add/remove
programs.

After the updates the questionable updates were no longer listed in the
add/remove programs.

I wnet to the Microsoft update site and the MS scan indicated I did not need
any updates.

Not being (the updates) in the add remove programs, I questioned the result
and decided to download one of the updates and manually install it knowing
that if in fact the update was installed, a notice would appear now allowing
the manual update.

The update did manually install and then was able to be seen in the
add/remove programs.

Consequently my observation is that if someone does a system restore, then
all updates that were applied after the restore point are no longer there
and the MS update scan would not indicate what updates were in fact needed.

That being said, one who keeps there system up-to-date with all the current
updates is no longer protected or are they?
