Windows Update will not download updates

I keep getting the same code over and over in my Windows Vista Windows
Update: Windows could not search for new updates, Error(s) found: Code
80070057 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I have tried disconnecting my Norton Security software: no dice. I have
tried making sure there is enough disc space: there is. I have tried
everything else Windows Update, and Dell (it is a Dell computer) suggests.
Nothing has worked. Windows Update just wont update.

Any solutions out there?

80070057 - ERROR_INVALID_PARAMENTER. Third party service which is running
in the computer creating the problem. Please do a clean boot and then
install the updates.

Description of the CheckSUR update for Windows Vista and for Windows Vista
for x64-based systems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Are you running Vista or Vista SP1? ...Vista x64 Edition?

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Control Panel | Programs |
Uninstall a program (or Control Panel | Programs and Features, if using
Classic view).

2. IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your
anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

3a. Download this removal tool to your desktop:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

3b. Right-click on the saved download and select Run as Administrator.

4. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir (free):
http://www.free-av.com/

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

Do your problems persist now?

I am running Vista Home Premium, the 32 bit version, with the Service Pack 1
installed.

I will not be uninstalling and dismantling my Norton Security, thanks.

Does someone have a suggestion for fixing Update that does not involve
tossing out my whole web security system, which is supposed t be Windows
Vista compatible?

"...supposed to be Windows Vista compatible" being the operative phrase.

Do you understand that you can always reinstall the Norton app if my
suggestion has no effect?

Your suggestion was to toss Symantec's product and use freeware. So, that
isn't going to happen. Next idea please.

No, my suggestion was to remove the Norton application & temporarily replace
it to see it was causing the problem:

80070057 - ERROR_INVALID_PARAMENTER => Usual translation: A third-party
service is causing the problem.

What other third-party services may be running in the background other than
the Norton application? A hijackware infection qualifies as a "third-party
service" here: Have you explored that possibility?

If SP1 was installed via Windows Update or manually, was the Norton
application running in the background at the time?
