I've posted this in Win98 General as well, and was suggested I post here.

The Windows Update will not run, I get the above error message.
System: Win98 with IE6 SP1

I have run virus scan, malware scans, and all are clean (this was the
original problem on this particular machine).
Have reinstalled IE6 with SP1.
I have followed the KB as stated, still nothing.
Ensured that ActiveX and scripting are set as stated.
Have run the Regserv32 as noted in other Newsgroup posts.

The problem is the Active X controls. I have been attempting to run the
online virus scan from Symantec, and it comes up with ActiveX Control needs
to be installed. Even followed their suggestions, to no avail.

Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Alice,

I want to help. Did you run the following specific regsvr32 commands? If
any are different, would you please run these again? Just copy and paste
the following into a command line.

REGSVR32 WINTRUST.DLL
REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL
REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL
REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL

Please let us know how this step turned out.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi Pat,

Thanks for the response. Yes I did run those specific commands. I even did
it again, just to be sure.
