I'm trying to update a Windows XP SP1 system. I've just done a reinstall of
SP1 from disk and enabled Automatic Updates. (The reinstall was not
completely clean; it failed to copy some files from the DVD to the start menu
even though they were clearly visible, but things seem to be working)
The first thing the Automatic Updates tries to download is an updated
installer; unfortunately, I'm getting failed messages on:
+Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
+Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
+Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
without any reason given. I'm tried downloading without installation and get
the same error.
I wondered if the problem was that I'm using an old IE6 web-browser, but
unfortunately I can't download IE7 for XP SP1 and other browsers don't seem
to work. Short of getting the SP2 disk by post, is there any way to resolve
this problem and download updates (including SP2 and IE7) ?
I've tried the advice in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
without success.
