windows update not installing with XP SP1 / IE6

I'm trying to update a Windows XP SP1 system. I've just done a reinstall of
SP1 from disk and enabled Automatic Updates. (The reinstall was not
completely clean; it failed to copy some files from the DVD to the start menu
even though they were clearly visible, but things seem to be working)

The first thing the Automatic Updates tries to download is an updated
installer; unfortunately, I'm getting failed messages on:

+Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP
5.1 (KB842773)
+Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
+Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

without any reason given. I'm tried downloading without installation and get
the same error.

I wondered if the problem was that I'm using an old IE6 web-browser, but
unfortunately I can't download IE7 for XP SP1 and other browsers don't seem
to work. Short of getting the SP2 disk by post, is there any way to resolve
this problem and download updates (including SP2 and IE7) ?

I've tried the advice in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
without success.

Hello Mike,

Give a Dial-a-Fix a chance.

Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode.(F-8)

Please read the page and Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download
Dial-ª-fix

Exit Safe Mode (Reboot)

Try the updates n0w

Try getting the updates using Internet Explorer, by going here:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can
be scanned. Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and
download the same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar
notification. If going to the site is successful, keep going back until
there are no more critical updates to install.

I hope that post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Download and install the standalone version of SP2 for Windows XP
prior to any other update and disable *any* applications running
in the background in front of installing SP2. Download of SP2:

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I tried the "XP SP2 developer link" from Ottmar. It didn't quite install
cleanly -
it complained at the end when tidying up the temporary files - but did
install well enough that Windows update (and IE7) then seems to have sorted
out everything else.

I didn't try the Dial-a-fix (that was next) but that did point me at the
"hdtune" shareware, which at least gave me confidence that the hard drive
wasn't the problem.

Thanks again,
Mike
