i am running Windows XP home SP1 and wheen i try to go to
windows update it opens to the first window and displays
across the top Checking for latest version etc. and the
rest of the screen is blank. It never goes beyond this.
I can go to other pages just fine.

Thanks,

If you are an Admin on the machine delete the Catroot2
folder under System32. It is safe to delete it. Reboot
and try windows update again.

I'm having the same problem I also have the problem on no history dropdown in
explorer and another browser.
'' did a post saying to delete the
catroot2folder and saying it is okay to delete it. I am suspicious of that, I
don't have catroot to just catroot, and it is full of files I would be very
hesitant to delete.
I suggest to anyone that is thinking of deleting folders in the system 32
directory, to check and make sure it has an "OK to delete text file" in the
directory

The HP help people told me to rename my catroot file as follows:
got to DOS command then type

net stop cryptsvc <enter>
ren%systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2 <enter>
net start cryptsvc <enter>
exit

The only trouble is that it didn't work for me... SIGH... But it may work
for some others, so I am passing it on.
