Windows Update not responding after Windows XP Setup Repair

Hi,

After completeing a Windows XP Setup (Repair) Windows Update now is totally
unresponsive and just freezes while trying to load. I even tried going to the
Windows Update website and it won't open either. Is there someting wrong with
the website or my computer after the repair? Any help with this will be
greatly appreciated.

P.S. - Also all of my previous updates, etc. prior to performing the
"Repair" are now gone!!!!! Any thoughts on this? Thanks again.

Since a Repair Installation replaces the Windows files from the CD, all
updates not included on the CD will need to be reinstalled and that is
normal.

Does your CD have SP-1 or SP-2?

Hi Jupiter,

Thanks for your reply. I went to the links you provided, but nothing there
helped my situation. I literally can't even get to the Windows Update website
at all. No matter how I try to get there the website freezes just trying to
open it and I have to do a crtl-alt-del to close the non-responsive program.
Any other thoughts or help on this would be most appreciate. Also, I do have
a SP2 CD that I got form Microsoft about 1 month ago. If I install this will
it have all of the previous updates up to the time the CD was created? I'll
look forward to hearing back crom you. Thanks again.

Monty,

The SP2 CD will have all the updates issued up until the time the CD
came out, August 2004. You will then have to reinstall all the updates
issued after that date. You could download and save all of them and then
slipstream SP2 with the original XP CD to give you one CD that contains
XP, SP2, and all subsequent updates.

The issue of Windows Update freezing when you first access the site
could be due to a number of causes. Suggest you look in the WINDOWS
directory for the WindowsUpdate.log. Open it with Notepad and check to
see if there are any error codes associated with the failed attempts to
access WU.
Suggest turning off any popup blocker before attempting to visit WU. If
the installed antivirus contains a script blocking component, that may
be why the site freezes. Temporarily disable the script blocker prior to
accessing WU to see if that's causing the issue.

You could also reinstall Windows Script 5.6 :

and/or reregister a required XML .dll :
Go to Start, Run, type in

regsvr32 msxml3.dll ( that's an L not a 1 )

Click OK.

Now try to access Windows Update.

I apologize for not replying back to you sooner. I can't explain it, but
when I got home last weekend I treied the Windows Update one last time before
trying your suggestions and it took right off. Since it's working again I
fgure I'll leave it alone!

I tried creating the slipstream Windows XP CD w/ SP2, but it doesn't want to
work. At POST It says booting from CD in non emulation mode and the says
cannot boot from CD - Code:1. I've tried to figure out what this means but
haven't had any luck. If you have any idea what this means that would be
great. Thanks again for your reply and helpful suggestions.

Suggest you skip slipstreaming the updates and use this method to
slipstream SP2 with XP :

Also, save all of the updates onto another CD so that you will not have
to download them again.

Howdy MowGreen,

I think I may have a problem with the slipstreaming. I don't have the
"network version for IT professionals" of SP2 (at least I don't think I do?).
I have a CD that I requested and received from Microsoft. It is called
"Windows XP Service Pack 2" and is SKU #E85-03147. Does this mean anything to
you? Thanks again for all of your advice.

Also, How do I save the other updates to CD? I used the update manager to
download and install all of the other critical updates except for SP2. Is
there a way to back them up onto a CD? I'll look forward to your reply.
