Windows Update not updated on pc

I go to the Windows Update website. I then see "Get the Latest Windows
Update Software. We've made improvements to our website. To download the
new version of the software and begin using Windows Update, please click
Install Now." After I click on the button install now, it shows "Windows
Update is downloading and installing the updated software. Downloading:
100%". Then I receive the following error: "The website has encountered a
problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options
provided below might help you solve the problem. For self-help options: 1.
Frequently Ask Questions 2. Find Solutions 3. Windows Update Newsgroup. For
assisted support options: 1. Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for
Windows Update issues).

Please help me figure out why this problem is occurring. For about one
month, I've been having this problem, so no new updates have been
downloading. Scary! I've contacted Microsoft about this 10 plus times, but
have only heard from them twice, with no second contact to my reply.

THANK YOU!

As a first, preliminary, response: please disable all anti-virus,
anti-spyware, popup-blocker, download accelerator, third-party firewall, and
try again. If you disabled a third-party firewall, then re-enable Windows
Firewall for the duration.

If the problem recurs, please look out for an 8-digit error number.

Hello Robin,

I went through this exercise last week on update Tuesday. The first time I
got the message about the website's encountering a problem. Then I tried
again and the new software was installed and downloads proceeded normally.

Just now, after reading this message, I clicked on my Windows Update
shortcut and once again I was told that I need to install new software. I
agreed to this and saw a message stating that files were downloading. It
reached 100% and then said it was installing.

Immediately, I received a message letting me know that "[Error number:
0x80070020] The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the
page you are trying to view."

So it seems something with Windows updates is still somehow messed up.

This issue is more insidious than what has been mentioned thus far. I too
have had this issue and it has blocked me from obtaining the latest round of
updates (automatically anyway...) due to the inability to receive updates
from our WSUS server, or open the Microsoft/Windows Updates sites.

Each time I get the same request to update the client, and the same error in
the logs, and the same "oooppps it didn't work" page back from the site.

I've been trying to work with a Microsoft Support rep. for nearly a week on
this -- support for the other side of the globe is ridiculous to say the
least! -- and we've tried renaming and removing all of the WU components and
then reinstalling KB927891 and the 3.0 client, last, we've tried elimintaing
the WU components from %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 and going to the
Microsoft/Windows Update site to have everything reloaded from there... all
to no avail!

There is a service dependancy issue here according to the error information
analysis, and it appears to be in the COM+ service. It cannot be started,
therefore making it impossible to start services dependent upon it (like:
Automatic Updates, System Event Notification, BITS...).

A search for repairing the COM+ service got me the following KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315296 (KB315296) regarding a cleanup of a
damaged COM+ catalog. The first step is to rename
%WINDIR%\System32\CLBCATQ.DLL -- guess what... can't do that as this file is
in continuous use by the O/S.

Anyone have any other ideas on how to correct this issue that came as part
of installation of the 3.0 client? I'm still waiting for an response to the
last test with COM+ (from early yesterday) from the Microsoft rep.

Thanks,
----
Rick.

As it turns out in my specific case sections of the registry had to be
replaced, several COM+ and Windows Update DLLs had to be re-registered and
then I had to download and reapply the BITS 2.0/WinHTTP 5.1 patch (KB842773)
before I could get the servcies started and get back to the Microsoft/Windows
Update site. I then verified the client's ability to scan the system and
obtain updates, successfully.

Since I did June's updates the "hard way" (download each from the site and
install from local drive) I'm not 100% certain that the connectivity to my
WSUS server is working -- though I believe at the moment my system is at
least checking in with the WSUS server...

Here are the specific registry entries that the Microsoft rep. had me
replace (with sections he provided that were appropriate for W2K and the 3.0
client):

- everything within HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventSystem
- everything within HKLM\\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost

I also re-ran, to verify, KB927891 and the Windows Update Agent 3.0.

Assuming all goes well when I release July's updates via WSUS... I'd say
issue solved without having to disable my Symantec AntiVirus Corp. Ed. or my
Ad-Aware SE Professional...
