hi, seem to be having lots of problems with my mates laptop, but have also
discovered that he hasnt yet installed XP SP2! When running windows update i
see one file over and over again (KB842773), once i install it, a further 20
critical updates appear ( but no SP2) it says ive installed the first one and
the other 20, but in about 1 min, the update icon appears in the sys tray,
and its back to saying file KB842773 is ready to be installed, if i install
again, i see the other 20 critical files i previously installed ( ie aas
though they wernet installed the last time) Still no sign of XP2. Has anyone
got any ideas??

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows Update and is not
offered by Automatic Updates

actaully it is, having worked on the problem for 5 hrs i found that the
onboard mcafee virus scanner was being blocked by 5 different viruses, ( 3
trojans also) and when i cleaned all of them, my updates were able to
download, and Sp2 was included also.

thanks anyway for taking the time to respond.

Nb the usual free scans didnt work, ie mcafee nor norton, and in the end i
had to use panda. For the adware, trend micro was also rendered unusable and
so i used spybot.

Now everything works and lap top is virus and spyware free

Main thing it is working now. Virus/malware/spyware do cause a lot of problems when
trying to update etc.
