Thanks for your very clear, explicit statement about Windows Update support,
below. That should be on the WinXP SP3 (Release Candidate 2) site. It's not
- and I did look. It should be in big, bold letters on a banner.
FYI - I wasn't trying to run SP-3rc on a "production" machine - it's a
secondary test workstation I was using to test both OS and application
stability and functionality under SP3rc2. Silly me for expecting the
simplest, most basic OS features, such as Windows Update and manual patches,
to actually work.
I am rolling-back the box. I won't bother with SP3 until it's released,
officially - assuming they've fixed the update & patching problems by then.
I'm not so self-indulgent as to leave an unpatched, unpatchable box tied to
the internet that's wide open for the spammers and the rest of the organized
crime in the world. (The fact that a number of old, critical post-SP2
security patches were left out of what was allegedly a "cumulative" update is
something I'll press further in the SP3 forum).
Finally, this thread was originally a comment and a warning for others who
might be facing the same issues with Windows Update. Not a request for
support.
