I clicked on "Windows Update > Office Family" and received:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010404541033.aspx
"Office Update is unable to check for updates"

This problem started with a failed attempt to install Symantec Norton
Internet Security 2005.
There are no .msp files in folder \Windows\Installer. it is filled with
*.msi files such as 497b3.msi. A mouse over file name indicates Type: Windows
Installer package Title: Norton Internet Security Date Modified: 2/23/2005
Time 3:56 PM Size 1.61MB. There are 19 such *.msi files.
A search of the computer reveals 36 *.msp files in folder
\windows\java\Installer. A mouse-over indicates these are Office Hotfixes.

There is no applicable support in the above error message except that my
*.msp files are missing and there will be no more Office updates. I checked
out the Windows Installer information but found no help.

Any help would be appreciated

"YogaBob",

I am sorry you are hitting this problem. Let's establish first that your
Windows Installer is working properly:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: services.msc
4. Press <Enter> or click OK
5. Scroll down and double-click on Windows Installer service
6. Verify that the service is "Started" and verify that you can choose the
startup type (make sure this is not grayed out).

Please reply back to this posting with the results, and we'll be happy to
look further.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I getting a different message always. Fyi, I had Symantec Norton Software in
my PC before; but I get rid of that software. Now it seems I am missing some
..msp files. ANyone know how to solve the problem before. This is the message
I always get:

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable.

Thank you!
