Windows Update page hangs indefinitely

I go to the Microsoft Update page and I get a message that says that the
files required for Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed. I
click on the link that says to re-register or re-install them, and the page
hangs indefinitely. I go to work, return hours later, and it's still hanging.

Does anyone know what to do?

While searching to get BITS (Background Intelligent Tranfer Service) to start,
I saw this about registering it:

I typed in the two commands as directed on the page you gave me and received
"register succeeded" messages both times. But when I go to Microsoft Update I
still get "Files required for Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed" and when I click the link to register or re-install them, the page
goes blank and stays that way indefinitely.

So, your solution did not work.

Hi,

Some have posted that registering MSXML3.DLL fixed this problem.

Register MSXML3.DLL and see if it helps:

1. Click Start.

2. Choose Run.

3. In the Run box, type (or copy/paste from this post)

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\MSXML3.DLL

(note the space there in the middle)

4. Click OK.

I have the same symptom and tried all three of these and it didn't help.
Each time it said that it succeeded.

What now?

I pasted in that command and received an error message saying it failed-- the
specified module could not be found.

How do I replace it?

Hi,

Please try this:

Download and install Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7
(SP7) and see if it helps.

In the link below, set the correct language for your OS and press the
Go button. Then download and run the msxml3.msi file found at the
bottom of Web page
