Windows Update page hijacked

When I try to open Windows Update (either through the XP surface or manually)
on one of my PCs, I get the following text:

"Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the
most out of your computer.
Windows Update uses ActiveX Controls and active scripting to display content
correctly and to determine which updates apply to your computer.
Tell me about active scripting and ActiveX controls
To view and download updates for your computer, Windows Update should be
listed as a Trusted Site in Internet Explorer.
To add Windows Update to the trusted sites zone:
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites...
Uncheck the "require server verification" checkbox.
Make sure the following URLs are listed in the Web Sites list box:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
Note: If you need to add a URL to the Web Sites list and the Add button is
disabled, contact your system administrator.
© 2003 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Terms of Use."

Apparently, this is either a popup or the Windows XP update page has been
hijacked.
Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know a way to fix it?

It's legit, Bernie. See:

You receive a "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX
controls on this page" message when you try to use Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;836942

If you follow the recommendations, can you then reach Windows Update? Is
reaching Windows Update a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Have you
installed/uninstalled/updated a third-party application (e.g., anti-virus)
which is running in background when trying to reach Windows Update?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:

I would strongly suggest that you not put windows update as a trusted site
since there has never been a need for that!! this sound like you have
spyware/malware or virus/trojan in your computer!!!!!

I would strongly urge you you to run a antivirus scan and a antispywarescan
with a antispyware tool like counterspy -->
http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/CounterSpy.cfm

NOTE THAT ANY ISSUE WITH WINDOWS UPDATE NO MATTER HOW OLD YOUR SYSTEM IS ,
IT IS EQUAL WITH A FREE NON CHARGED DIRECT SUPPORT FROM MICROSOFT!

SO CONTACT MICROSOFT AND THEY WILL SET UP A FREE SUPPORT CASE FOR YOU!

Before offering erroneous suggestions, perhaps one could read the
FAQ/Troubleshooting information on Microsoft's site:
=====
How do I add Microsoft Update to my list of trusted Web sites?

- In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- On the Security tab, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
- Under Add this Web site to the zone, type (or copy and paste) this URL:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/.
- Click Add, and then click OK.

Did you read http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;836942?

I and many others have had those sites in Trusted Sites zone for many years,
Daniel.
