WIndows Update problem that No one can solve

I've recently upgraded my PC from XP Home to XP Professional

My system is XP Professional version 2002, Service Pack 1.
The reason that the version is older, is because I got it for free through
the Mircosoft Acedemic Alliance that is an agreement between my college and
microsoft for some free packages. XP Pro is one of those.

I have zero updates installed now, so I goto Windows Update. The page says
that there is new update software, and IE begins to search, download, copy,
and register these new files. In the end, it doesn't work. I get the error:
0x800700C1

I've serached this error in the KB and in these forums. I've done the steps
provided to fix, none helped me (or the other people with my problem for that
matter). Since my version is so old - my computer is INFECTED by several
worms, viruses and spyware. In an 8 hour period, I will have over 2000
processes running, and I get about 1% of my CPU time to myself to try to post
here. I have the extended $40 version of AdAware, which is now ineffective
b/c the problem is out of hand with the viruses, AdAware support says that
since my Windows is out of date, hackers have exploited my older version.
I'm also lead to belive that these viruses and worms are preventing my
update, so how am I to fix this problem?

I've been in email contact with microsoft support, and after 3 volleys of
email exchange, they are un able to help me, This is not an OEM version of
windows.

I'm in despreate need of help, I figure the resources that this forum could
provide will be much more helpful than Ubiad at microsoft support.
Thanks in advance, I'll be checking my post several times a day - KB

Since "my computer is INFECTED by several worms, viruses and spyware",
there is no telling what kind of damage has been inflicted to your Windows
operating system. I would suggest backing up your files and performing
a "clean install" of Windows XP.

Clean Install Windows XP
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

To make your installation easier, create a new Windows XP Pro
CD with SP2 slipstreamed and then install.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Thanks for the response Carey, but I would like to avoid a clean install if
possible. The reason I upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro in the first place is
becauase I was unable to install downloads from windows update when I had XP
Home. 9 months ago while running my XP Home I was asked install via WU the
BITS 2.0 (KB842773) - and it would fail to install (much like my currenty Pro
problem). I would then download and install the BITS 2.0 manually from the
downloads area of microsoft.com, then WU would be able to see the 19 critical
updates I needed. I would Download them, and they would fail to install. So I
figured it was some OS problem, and upgraded to Pro. Still, no windows
updates will install. But at them time of my XP Home, all online virus
scanners said I was still clean, I've only revently been infected, but I
haven't been able to install WUs since last June..

I just upgraded to XP Pro two nights ago. I have over 40 gigs of personal
files and projects for both work and school, it would take me days to back it
all up on CDs, there must be an easier way to solve my WU problem then a
clean install?

In reply to below, that link says in nice bold print,

DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER:

Should I do it anyways? Since the alternative that the page provides is
borked?

It sounds like you could use some more space. Is your box a desktop?
If you decide on the clean installation, then instead of CD's you could
buy and install a hard drive - copy your 40gigs to the second drive.

The update had nothing to do with you getting as Trojan.
Your unprotected computer was most likely the cause.
Did you have a firewall properly configured and enabled:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673

Did you have Anti virus installed?
Was it updated within the last week?
Was the anti virus properly configured?

Ignore that message.
Download SP-2 directly so you can burn it to CD.

You need to clean the computer FIRST.
You should not plan on an update or patch resolving issues unless the update
is specifically designed to resolve that issue.

The yellow section on this link can help:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Then install SP-2:

Well, I've done some cleaning of Spyware, it has helped my problem slightly..
although I have a new Spyware that no detection service anyone has listed is
taking care of - here is its symptom .. Everytime I load IE it redirects me
to the Cannot Find Server page, DNS not found error. but Everthing works in
Firefox. So I'm unable to get Windows updates at this time

I've also been in contact with Microsoft support about my windows update
issue, first the emailed me to give a detailed description of what the
problem was, and its been 3 days now that I haven't heard back (I bet they're
trying to think of a nice way to tell me to reformat?)

Anyways, I think I'm taking your advice and getting a new 120 GB HD and try
to clean install the slipstreamed SP2 XP Pro.. but I have one more concern
- I attempted to Install Windows using the XP Pro sp2 slipstreamed disk over
my Pro Xp1 current install, and I got an error during the install which
forced me to reinstall my SP1 CD. Should this concern me when I try a
clean install?
