I have two Dell computers on a network using the same hardware. One is a
Dimension 4500 which is about four years old. The other is a nearly brand new
Dell Dimension E510.
A while ago I started having trouble with Windows Update and also with user
logons on the 4500 but I thought I had managed to fix them. Unfortunately, it
would appear that the Windows Update issue is now back again.
The problem is that since this problem recurred (Nov. 2005) it has meant
that I have had to run the computer with Windows Update turned off because
otherwise everytime it tries to update the computer "crashes" with IE stuck
at the update page and nothing happening, and the only solution is to remove
power completely and start up again.
This Dimension 4500 is running XP SP2 and otherwise seems to run OK if a
little slowly. I have run an up-to-date virus check (McAfee) and
Spyware/Adware (AOL), but nothing has been detected.
I have not had any problems with the Dimension E510 so far and when I first
set this computer up, I spent some time going through what I believed were
the relevant registry settings so that I could fix the problems with the
Dimension 4500 by making all the settings the same or similar and this is how
I believe I fixed the problem in the first place. Unfortunately, I lack the
knowledge and experience be certain that this is the case or to know where to
start looking again.
Any suggestions from this group that would assist me in fixing this problem
would be gratefully received.
Best regards,
Russell
