I currently use internet provider - AOL broadband. I have 1 pc and 1 laptop
both working on Windows XP. Both are now controlled through a wireless
router - Netgear D834G.

I have no problems accessing the web for any other sites but when I try to
download windows updates I get as far as choosing - Express or Custom Install
and then I get the 0x80072EE2 error.

I have gone through the suggested troubleshooting list and still can't get
the updates to work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks but this didn't help either.

You may be interested in the last one about the Router.

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page.

It worked for me. YMMV

<snip of relevant part> I was getting the 0x80072EE2 message on a machine this
evening. I never had a problem with it.

I tried all of your suggestions to no avail. However, in a post from several months
ago, someone mentioned an MTU seating on a router. I had upgraded the firmware on my
home router several days ago and left the MTU set at the default of 1500. Come to
think of it, my Internet connection seemed a little sluggish since I upgraded the
firmware.

I reset the MTU to 1492, and voila! Windows Update works again.

I write this post so that someone else doesn't overlook a simple solution to a very
frustrating problem.

Router / Firewall / Wireless Router MTU ==> 1492 or less <snip>

I stumbled on the solution this morning. The problem is with the AOL
connection. Basically you need to amend the MTU settings of the WAN down to
1400. You can experiment and see if it works going up to 1460 but it doesn't
work past that.

Typical I spend days reading the same troubleshooting methods then get the
answer to the problem from 3 sources all at the same time, just when I was
giving up hope!. Still it all works fine now.

Thanks
