Hi, I gete the following error when trying to manually do a Windows XP Pro
update. Normally Updates happen automaticly and I have no issues. This issue
came after trying to do an update manually (download SP2)

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
Error number - ox800a0046

I've searched the MS website and find no error number as above.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi

Please take a look at the following windows update
troubleshooter article:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x800A0046 error.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=20&ln=en

If it didn't help, try this:

Reset the security settings on the BITS and Windows Update services
and see if it helps:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP12.phx.gbl

(the "sc sdset ..." part for the two services in the link above)

If the above doesn't work, see if the tip from Karl B/Melvin Salazar
works for you:

Firstly, I take no credit for this I was going though the network
newsgroup because my dialup network settings had vanished and a guy
named Melvin Salazar suggested the following which WORKED!

'You can also try doing the following, it worked for me:

Go to Services under the Administrative Tools folder.

Notice that the logon account is set to a NT/User account under the RPC
(remote procedure call) service. Change it to Local System account,
under the Logon tab, and restart the computer. Many of these services
depend on the RPC, but there was an error when it came to configuring
this paticular service.'

Now once I made these changes I was able to get my network icons back
as well as use Windows Update.

Thanks
Karl

Of course not. The prefix you should be searching with is 0x not ox.
Also, especially when it is clear such as in this case that the value is
a hex string often the code is cited without any prefix at all.

Hence the best search should include both cases (at least):

http://groups.google.com/groups?num=....windowsupdate

(Google Groups search for
800A0046 OR 0x800A0046 MSFT OR MVP group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate
- Sorted by date to show current thinking
)

With appropriate search arguments on the MS Support site you could
also have found the same KB article that Tad Marshall found: KB883821

http://support.microsoft.com/search/...mDays=&InCC=on
