Windows Update problems with Excel and Word

After Updating with the April 17th Windows Update, my files would not open in
Excel and Word. The programs were not responding. I also had problems with
Norton Antivirus programs. Once I removed the Update for Windows XP
(KB912812) the programs ran as before. I learned my lesson and will now
update one update at a time and will also look for discussions regarding the
updates before I install them.

If found after an automatic update on April 14 I could not open my Excel or
Word files. I performed a system restore and could open the files. After
another automatic update on April 16 I found I could not open my Excel or
Word files. Something in the automatic updates are causing the problem

Perhaps the following will explain & resolve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812

Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917425/
