I am running XP Pro SP2 on a laptop. I bring my laptop on my commute to
school and connect via 802.11x at multiple locations at school. I know that
each building has a different access point, and I presume each hands my
computer a different IP address. I also connect via 802.11 at home. Though
I am considering setting up Windows to automatically download and install
updates without prompting
me, I am afraid that roaming around will cause problems with Windows Update.
Here are
some details:
- When I am in class in McDonnel Douglass Hall, my laptop connects to
McDonnel Douglass' access point.
- When I am using my laptop in the student center, my laptop connects
via the student center router.
- and on and on...
- and I also connect via 802.11 at home.
One day I may shut down my laptop at the end of class in McDonnel,
interrupting Windows Update and causing it to crash before shut down is
complete. Or the laptop will be running as I move from McDonnel to the
student center, Windows Update will be running, and WU will lose its
connection to Microsoft and will thus crash.
Is WU intelligent enough to be used while roaming? I use IBM's propeitary
Access Connections 802.11x connection software, not the Windows 802.11x
connection driver.
THANKS!
