Hello, I'm having a rather trying time trying to get Windows Update to work.
I have no visible problem, as I get no error message, but I have not recieved
a single update for roughly three months. I have raised a ticket with
Microsoft support, however after much playing around they came to the
conclusion that my machine was up to date. I beg to differ on this, i've
looked at the catalogue and this would suggest that I'm due quite a few. I
have Windows XP Pro, to SP3 status, I have McAfee security installed as well
as Webroot Spysweeper with Antivirus and now thanks to Microsoft I also have
an AntiMalware checker. I've tried running Windows Update with these services
turned on and off with no success. Please can someone help me. Thanks.

Hello Engel,

I've tried everything that you suggested, to no avail. I
passed all aspects of the Microsoft Validation tool & ran the Dial-a-Fix
program, re-booting every step of the way. I still come up with a big "0"
when I check for updates. Nice try though.

The fact that you have two (2) anti-virus applications installed and loading
at boot could have something to do with it. Uninstall one of them
(preferably the one you've not purchased; e.g., McAfee Security Center
freebie from your ISP?) via Add/Remove Programs, reboot twice, and see if
the behavior persists?

[Was MS Support aware of the fact that you had two AV apps installed?]

Were all components of McAfee Security (Center) and/or SS w/AV running in
the background when you installed WinXP SP3 roughly three months ago (I
assume)?

Hello PA Bear, McAfee is my original paid for Anti Virus, Webroot was
originally installed as purely an Anti Spywear piece of software and as such
is also paid for, Webroot added Anti Viral functionality free due to be being
a "Valued Customer". As far as Microsoft Support knowing about both bits of
software, yes I told them, yes for about three hours they had full control of
my machine, whether or not it sank in is a matter for debate. Finally yes
both were installed but only Webroot was running because at the time it was
Anti Spyware only when SP3 was installed. If I had to uninstall one then I'd
rather Uninstall Mcafee, purely as it's easier to re-install. Do you think
that this is the way to go for a re-try?

If beer is the answer, I''''m gonna love the question

Hello again PA Bear, I have now uninstalled McAfee, re-started twice,
disabled Webroot for the duration of the Windows Update session. All to no
effect. I would point out that McAfee and Webroot have happily co-habitated
for the last couple of years with no ill effects. I still show no updates
required.

Paul,

Initiate a manual attempt at updating from Start > Windows Update [or
Microsoft Update, if the system is opted in to that]
When/if no updates are detected, close Internet Explorer.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in WINDOWS.
Scroll all the way to the bottom of it for the latest entries.
Copy and paste at least the 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

For some info as to what the WindowsUpdate.log is all about -

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Hello again MowGreen, I might point out that this log file goes right back to
the 7th Oct, ie when I was still receiving updates. Just in case it helps, I
can just about decipher a successful installation in the log.

There's nothing in the WU.log to indicate that any needed updates were
detected. Please click Start > Run > then copy&paste the below into the
Open: line and click OK or press Enter

%windir%\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log

That log shows all successful updates installed by Automatic Updates.
