There is an post earlier in the list at 1107 from powerhammer2. In case you
don't have it, I will copy it in here.
Ooookaaaayyyy, so everybody has a problem with the Windows Updates that
won't
download and install. I found the trick to this. Here's the trick: Down in
your task bar near the clock are all of your icons. Right click on each one
of the one at a time and a menu will pop up, select "Close" or "Exit" until
you see no more of these icons except the speaker icon. Those icons are
programs that runs in the back ground. Make sure that they are all closed
out, then try logging into Windows Updates again. They should download and
install normally like they should be. This is most common with Windows 2000
Professional with Service Pack 4 installed. Any of you having the same or
similar problems with other Windows versions, please read the instructions
above and hopefully it will work for you. Good luck and I hope it works a
miracle for you.
FYI: I have been a computer tech for a long time and I have been successful
in solving such strange behaviours in computers.
