Windows Update Prompts for Proxy Server & Error ID: 0x8024401B

Hi,

I am posting this message in the hope that somebody can assist me with this.

Since v5 of WindowsUpdate was put live, I have been unable to successfully
access the Windows Update website from a desktop PC running Windows XP
Professional SP2. I installed the publicly available release of SP2
yesterday in the hope of fixing the issue, but this hasn't worked.

When I access the URL: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com using the URL or
using the command from the 'Help' menu I get to the page where I can select
the type of scan that I want to perform - the scan I choose does make any
different. The website begins scanning my PC then prompts me for a username
and password to be authenticated against a proxy server. I don't access the
Internet using a proxy server, as I am dial-up user. I then click 'Cancel'
three times and the following error message is displayed:

Windows Update is unable to connect to the proxy server. For more
information, see your system administrator.

[Error number: 0x8024401B]
Can anybody help with this?

Many thanks,

Neil

Hi

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

As you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

Please report back any finding, good or bad :-)
