Windows Update redirects to v4 on Windows XP Professional x64

Up until about a week ago my Windows Update was working perfectly and
defaulting to v6. Now for whatever reason IE redirects to
v4.windowsupdate.com and of course it fails since it is an old version of the
site that probably isn't suppposed to be in use anymore.

I've tried looking for references to v4 in the registry and deleting them.
I've tried reinstalling the ActiveX control (clearing browser cache) and
reinstalling automatic updates. Yesterday I formatted and the problem went
away. Until I downloaded the newest updates and now it redirects to the
v4.windowsupdate.com site again.

I'm beating my head against the wall on this one. Any ideas?

See if this helps -

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.

If it don't work, then try renaming the softwaredistribution folder.
The downside of renaming the softwaredistribution folder is that you'll lose the history.

Deleting the directory failed saying it was in use. In safe mode I renamed it
and rebooted. Unfortunately the problem seems unchanged.

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Please post back the result from MS that works for you.

OK, finally a working solution here!

-Goto Control Panel
-Make a new administrator user (must be an administrator and not a limited
account)
-Goto start menu, right click 'Windows Update'
-Click "Run as"
-Run as the new User you just created

This fixed it for me.
