See if this helps -
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.
If it don't work, then try renaming the softwaredistribution folder.
The downside of renaming the softwaredistribution folder is that you'll lose the history.

| Up until about a week ago my Windows Update was working perfectly and
| defaulting to v6. Now for whatever reason IE redirects to
| v4.windowsupdate.com and of course it fails since it is an old version of the
| site that probably isn't suppposed to be in use anymore.
|
| I've tried looking for references to v4 in the registry and deleting them.
| I've tried reinstalling the ActiveX control (clearing browser cache) and
| reinstalling automatic updates. Yesterday I formatted and the problem went
| away. Until I downloaded the newest updates and now it redirects to the
| v4.windowsupdate.com site again.
|
| I'm beating my head against the wall on this one. Any ideas?
