Windows Update Registration Error

I was trying to update my laptop to IE7 and noticed that my last auto update
was in Nov 2006. When I try to use express or custom update through Windows
Update I get the following:
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

If I try the recommended approach, the updater(?) seems to download and
register fine and brings me back to the Express/ Custom update screen. It
has, however, fixed nothing and I`m in a loop of registering/ reinstalling
the files.
I`ve thought it might be the active x and have restored the defaults to no
avail. I`ve also turned of my antivirus/ interent shield ( Fsecure through
Shaw Internet) but that hasnt worked either. Ideas?
Jeff

I got the same message with XP. The only way I found to fix it was to go to
Start-Run and type in wuaueng.dll then Enter. It worked for me. Mark

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

I`ve got updates!! Thanks TaurArian. The first fix seems to have done it. As
for the Acer fix, when I installed it I lost my internet and had to System
restore. I`m not a big fan of Acer aftermarket support and things like this
dont help.
Thanks to all.
