OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 version 5.1.2600

Prob: The recent XP security update (KB883939) (KB891781) although were
successfully updated (as verified by the Installation History) kept
re-appearing in Windows Update to be installed again.

Resolution: I've turn off microsoft pop-up blocker, norton anti-virus,
microsoft anti-spyware, rebooting, custom install, express install, hide the
updates, restore the updates, BUT still receive the same Windows Update
prompt to install again. (despite having successfully installed time and
again). I've no other 3rd-party monitoring tools running in the background.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

I'm getting the same problem. I've seen it on two machines now.
Currently on XP Pro SP2 with updates KB887980 (update for Office 2003) &
KB896999 (Update for Outlook 2003 Junkmail).
I had it yesterday on an XP home SP2 PC with the Windows Installer Update.

It get the yellow shield in my systray saying Updates are availble to
install. I install them. 30 seconds later the same icon is back in the
systray. If I re-run Windows update, it shows the same updates as available
to download / install.

Hi Melvyn!
I have the same problem, downloading and installing KB883939. It keeps
reappearing on the available updates list. I notified Micosoft about it, and
the Support Professional gave me a bunch of fixes to try (which I am
reluctant to do because I might have new problems it they don't work). I was
told to do the following:
1. Delete the WUTEMP folder.
2. Register the (9) Active X control files.(Registry)
3. Rename the Software Distribution folder.
4. Reinstall Internet Explorer 6.
I hope there is an easier way.

Hi Snuggles,
My WUTEMP folder is empty. My last attempt at the registry screwed up my PC.
I've given up on this issue since no MVP could offer a resolution. Hence, I
un-installed my SP2, in order to re-install my XP and patched the whole
system again to SP2. Damn it! Took me 2 days to get my system up again, but
I'm glad the Update issue is successfully resolved. I quite sure this is an
XP Update bug and hopefully Microsoft has a resolution for this. (should this
bug happen again)

I eventually fixed mine by opening an Office app and using "detect & repair"
(under help).

I found in the Windows update logs that the two updates were actually
failing to install, but Windows update wasn't telling me this. Fixing the
Office install allowed the updates to install OK.

First of all make sure that you do have "the same problem",
identical in all respects, otherwise create your own thread
with a more specific Subject, rather than trying to piggyback
your issue on an OP's details.

Try uninstalling the update?

A likely explanation for this symptom is that the final copying
of one or more of the modules which the update changes
was blocked by the security software (which was disabled
only after the problem happened.) Then the update would
be reoffered because of the regression but unable to be
properly installed because it was already partially installed.

There is an option on the update tool which allows users
to force an update to be installed (to override regression
checks) but AFAIK it is only ever used manually.

Uninstalling the update would restore the versions of the modules
which were present before the first install attempt and make the
second attempt more likely to succeed.

The reason this is happening is probably that Windows "Office Source Engine"
Service has been disabled. Suggest you right click on My Computer, open up
"Services" under "Services and Applications" and double click on the "Office
Source Engine".

1. Set the Startup type to be Automatic
2. Manually start the service.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, you will find that any current and future
office updates will install without any further complaint. Reinitialising
Office as others have suggested will fix the problem, but it's a bit of a
sledgehammer solution.
