Windows Update Response: Must be Operating a MS Windows Operating System

My Windows 98se, IE 6 (Svc pack1) link to Windows Update opens IE but all I have this bizarre response:

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.


Not had this problem before. Definitely using W98se, home PC.

Any suggestions as to how one can gain access to the Windows Update web site?

There were many suggestions. However, the error message for: You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update.

references a Registry correction for Windows 2000 and WXP. I double checked my Windows 98se Registry for this same key/value. It does NOT exist.

The error typically happens when a 3rd party programs is intercepting
Windows Update. Some programs include Norton, Pop Stopper, Cookie Pal,
Norton Internet Security (needs to be configured to use Windows Update),
etc.

1. Make sure you are using Internet Explorer to access Windows Update.
2. Perform a clean boot then access Windows Update.
