I set the update time to 6:00 PM but the update occurs every morning at 5:00
AM. The setting doesn't change. Vista Home premium running on Dell
Dimension E520.

Please answer by number:

1. Is the "Automatic" (first) option selected and have you selected 6:00 PM
here? [If you select the second or third option, you'll have more control
over when updates are installed.]

2. If you reboot, do you find that the time you'd selected has reverted to
5:00 AM?

3. Is your computer time, date, *and* time zone correct?

4. Are you running Vista or Vista SP1 currently? If SP1, did this behavior
only start after you'd installed SP1?

5. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

6. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed (e.g., a
free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought the machine)?

1. yes and yes
2. no. stays at 6:00 PM
3. date & time and zone are correct
4. Vista SP1 - had erratic behavior after installing SP1. Uninstalled
McAfee and Firefox and it's now stable execpt for this problem.
5. Using AVG for virus protection
6. Got free McAfee through Comcast and uninstalled when problems occurred.

I'll try a non automatic setting as you suggest.

ANy additional insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you actually observed this happening at 5am or are you looking at the times
in the Windows Update log file?

Harry.

See Harry's reply.

If all components of McAfee Security Center were running in the background
when you installed Vista SP1, that fact alone may explain the "erratic
behavior" and/or the AU oddity.

1. Download this removal tool, saving it to your desktop:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...107083&lc=1033

2. Right-click on the saved file (MCPRT.EXE) and select "Run as
Administrator".

3. Reboot.

McAfee (and Norton) application are notorious for not uninstalling cleanly.
The removal tool should take care of the "leftovers." Whether these
leftovers were causing the AU behavior you describe remains to be seen.
