I click on updat eand get to the v5 window and click on
the update (express or custom) and the searching begins
and just stays on that screen with the green scrolling
bars and nothing ever comes to completion. Another
macine on my home network completes and shows the updates
fine for windows XP.
What do I need to do to correct this problem?

If you're using/running any kind of download helper/accelerator, or any "ad-blocking" utility program.... disable & exit that program ---- when accessing Windows Update.

Are you running Norton Internet Security? any other software firewall?

If you are on AOL, what version is it? Anyhow, (at least for now) do not use AOL browser for Windows Updates. Minimize AOL, and use Internet Explorer.

Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script."
To do this:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.

Try to access the Windows Update site again.

Also, verify that you can connect to SSL-enabled Web sites (sites that start with https://).

Most online retailers use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) sites during the checkout/payment process. If you've connected to one of these sites in the past then chances are that SSL is working correctly on your computer. You can also test your ability to connect to SSL sites using a SSL test site like this:

https://www.stanford.edu/group/idg/l...cure/test.html

If you cannot connect to SSL sites then the Windows Update scan will not work. Make sure that the SSL port (port 443) is open on your network.

Post back with your progress. If still a problem, provide details.

You should not have to worry about that one. Simply be sure to have the "usual" short list of sites into the Trusted sites list.

Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Look very closely at line that says: "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be clear or un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

Click OK.
Apply changes, then try Windows Update again.

Those on V5 should change (above) v4 to v5.
