Hi,
I am having a problem running Windows Updates from the Windows Update site
on a couple of Server 2003 Domain Controllers. Two updates have given me
problems so far - there may be more, but I decided to post this before
wasting any more time. Specifically, MS03-034 (KB824105) and MS04-044
(KB825119) are the current offenders. When Windows Update is running, it
will install several updates, then hang on one of these updates. Although
the progress meter slowly moves (even to 100%) and the processor is 50%
consumed by the process, nothing appears to happen, and it never finishes
the other selected updates. I've let it go as long as 2 hours. I believe
the install of these updates is happening, but it freezes on the "cleaning
up" process. I come to this conclusion because I ran the 825119 update
manually, and that's what happened. However, I've also run that update
manually and had it work. When it worked manually, I went back to the
Windows Update site, and it froze on the 824105 update.
Because I'm in the process of setting up these servers as new, I wiped one
out and ran the updates from the Windows Update site before adding the
Domain Controller and DNS Roles. They ran fine. It appears that something
is interfering with the cleanup. What scares me here is that I'd like to
automate updates on the network with SUS or SMS (haven't decided where to go
yet), and I'm afraid of my servers getting in this condition without me
knowing it because updates are typically added through silent installs.
Has anybody else seen this? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jerry
