Windows Update Service gets deleted

The Windows Update Service did not show in the Services list. I ran one of
the posted scripts to register a number of DLLs. I can now start the service
and access the Windows Update site without problems. However after one reboot
the sevice gets disablet, flagged for deletion and after another reboot it
does not show in the list any more. I can repeat this sequence as many times
that I like with the same result. Any ideas on how to get the service to
stick. I hope I can get some help with a solution otherwise I guess I have to
re-install everything.

An unrelated problem is that afet installing SP2 it seems that my P2P sevice
(Warez) does not seem to be able to download anything but the search function
works. Disabling the firewall does not seem to make any difference.

You haven't told us which version of WU this is nor have you given us
any details about your OS.

I'm puzzled by what you mean exactly by your first sentence.
In XP Services I see Automatic Updates as a service.
That's for WU v5 though and I can't remember how WU v4
was implemented.

Depending on terminology and details something which does
more or less match your symptom description is the behaviour
of the wuauclt.exe process.

Examine your logs for clues. If you have %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
you have WUv5. Otherwise look for %windir%\Windows Update.log
(Note the space between the same two words.)

If your OS is NT check for other clues in your Event log (probably the
application log.)

Another of your non-disclosed details which may be useful to know is
if you are also using AU and how you have it set up. You could also
experiment with different settings to see if they made any difference
in your problem symptom and report those observations if you need
more help. E.g. Run... control wuaucpl.cpl Again, these are
suggestions which may only apply in a WUv5 or XPsp2 context.

I am using XP Pro with SP2. Everything except .NET Framework 1.1 has been
downloaded. It seems I have WU 5 and I am setup for Autmatic Updates at 3:00
AM. I have looked in the logs for clues but there is a lot going on I don't
see some obvious proplem.

Check the properties of the Automatic Updates service.
I suspect you have it as Manual and you want it to be Automatic.
E.g. Run... services.msc etc.

If that's not it to give us something else to look at use a command
window to enter:

sc queryex wuauserv

and capture the output from the command.

Good luck

The Automatic Update is set to Automatic. The query command just confirms the
status as shown in the log capture in my previous post. As you can see the
service will first start after the first reboot but something sends it a stop
signal.
