Has anyone been able to offer a suggestion to the problem identified below. I may have missed it.

I have been working on this problem for about a week now without any
success. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right directions so I
can solve my problem. Here it is.

I am running WindowsXP Home edition. I am attempting to set my computer up
to automatically download WindowsXP Service Pak 2 when it is released. When
I click on Start/Control Panel/System/Automatic Update all of the
options are grayed out and there is a statement that "The Windows Update
Service is unavailable".

When I go to Start/Run and run "regsrv32 wuaaueng.dll", I receive the
message "DllRegisterServer in wuaueng.dll succeeded."

When I go to Strat/Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Services/AutomaticUpdate the Startup Type is set to Automatic and the
Service status is set to Start. Everything looks fine there. When I click
Start, I get the following error message: "Could not start the Automatic
Update Service on Local Computer. Error 1083: The executable program that
this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.

1. What does the error message mean?
2. What is the "executable program the this service is configured to run
in"?
3. How do I enable the automatic update service in view of these error
messages?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are getting the error
"Could not start the Automatic
>> Update Service on Local Computer. Error 1083: The executable program that
>> this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.

while trying to start Automatic Updates service,
try the following steps for resolution

Resolutions
Add wuauserv to the SvcHost process. To do that,

Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type REGEDIT.
Click OK.

The Registry Editor opens.
*WARNING*
Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be
solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\SvcHost.
Double-click to open the netsvcs key.
Under Value Data.
Add wuauserv to the list of services.
Click OK.
Exit the registry.
Restart the system.

Please let us know if that solves the problem
