in the last 2-3 weeks, all my clients (XP with SP2 ) got the same problem 1
minute after logon. one of the svchost.exe process goes up to 100% cpu lost.
When I stopped Automatic Update Service everthing is ok.

the hotfix 916089 for msi.dll doesn't work.
to clean the SoftwareDistribution folder and reboot the pc, doesn't work.

has anyone a solution for this problem!

thx
gerhard

Gerhard,
sadly only to go to manual update!

I'll be watching to see if anyone comes up with a proper solution. I
understand the problem to be due to a slow accumulation over the years of
updates. Certainly my pc didn't drop dead one day, it slowly got worse until
the problem became unbearable.

Good luck
John

I, too, have the exact same problem. The hotfix doesn't work, and the only
solution is to revert back to Windows Update (and check Office Update
manually). I've just got off the phone with a fellow on the Windows Update
Development Team who says that this is a known issue and it continues to
stump their team. Let's just hope a solution comes soon!

P.S. - What makes it even odder is that when Task Manager shows the continual
100% CPU during startup (or when Microsoft Update is manually run), there
isn't even any hard-drive activity. You would think that if the CPU is being
fully taxed, the hard drive would be going wild. But, nothing...not even a
whimper out of the hard drive. Still, it is nearly impossible for anything
else to be opened while the 100% CPU is in effect. Something odd is
definitely going on!

Development Team who says that this is a known issue and it continues to

Check the log? What is happening? What are you doing? Etc.

<title>KB902093 - How to read the Windowsupdate.log file</title>

If you are doing an Automatic "Express" install, try using the Custom Install
option to break the process down and figure out what specifically is failing.
E.g. one possibility is that it is failing on the download because the package
isn't being constructed properly. So, change the download to do only one
or a couple of updates at a time instead of all of them. Etc.

There was Windows Defender installed on my machine when it had the
issue. Uninstalling Defender fixed the issue on my machine, but other
machines here don't have Defender and have the issue.

Now we open a ticket at MS. I hope they have a solution for the problem.
If I have some news from MS about this problem I will post it.

thx to all

This is a known issue with 2 hotfixes. But, methinks something is amiss.
Some report the hotfix resolves the issue, others no.
Since you've already started down the support road with MS, let's see
what they say.

FIX: When you run Windows Update to scan for updates that use Windows
Installer, including Office updates, CPU utilization may reach 100
percent for prolonged periods
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089

The earlier hotfix is -

The Automatic Updates service may stop responding
