HI,

I am running windows 2000, I have checked unit for sassar virus and used
microsoft removal and nothing was found. Ran unit thru trendmicro and it is
clean. If I go to the windows update site or enable the automatic update
service from manual to automatic the unit automatically reboots. I can
download files from microsoft site with no problem. Right now the automatic
service is on manual.

Any ideas?

Sandra

Hi Sandra,

When you go to Windows Update website, is this using Internet Explorer? How far do you get into that site? At what point does the reboot occur?

Does your I.E. browser have problems at other websites? Does this pc reboot randomly at other times?

Yes, I am using internet explorer and as soon as it hits the site it reboots
also when you go into admin options, services and change automatic updates to
automatic it will reboot. As soon as you hit the site or change the service
to automatic it will reboot. No this is the only thing causing it to reboot.

Sandra,
Be sure the pc is thoroughly clean of malware! It's possible you have a malware infection.
Treat this issue first.
See The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol at http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Check on your startup programs. It may be a malware is among them.
You may go to www.dougknox.com and download Doug's Startup tracker.
That would help you get a complete list of startups.

You may need to do this in Windows Safe Mode.
Review Services.msc again
The following services are needed by the processes at Windows Update / Automatic Updates, and in services management console ( services.msc) must NOT be *Disabled* in the Startup type. They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic.
Here are the services & their Startup types:

Automatic Updates Automatic
Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual
Cryptographic Services Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

Those are the settings on my system, and should be the usual default.

no bugs and no malware. I am running Windows 2000,
Cryptographic Services Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

those services are not listed under services. I think that is for Windows
XP. any way still has the same problem.
