Windows Update site and MS Office update site will not work

Win XP, Officd XP Pro,
After recovering somewhat from a disasterous win SP 2 install I am having
trouble with Windows and Office Update sites. Windows site just sits there
and does nothing. Office site gives me an error saying there is a problem
with my computer and it cant check my computer.

I had to resort to reinstalling windows to get the computer to work again.

Any suggestions?

Try a system recovery,I had that problem and that worked! It's the only thing
that worked!
