What is "Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.381"?

I have Windows Update set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to
download and install them".

This morning at 3:08 AM Windows Vista downloaded and installed this software
to my computer without my permission.

I tried to Google it and searched MS Knowledgebase but can't find info about
it.

What is this?

Any info welcome,
Mike

I just did a clean install of windows vista, and when i checked for updates,
it said that I needed to update the Windows Update Software, so I did. Then
it checked for updates and everything went fine. Then I checked my update
history, everything was installed fine, except for this Windows Update
Software, which said that it Failed with error message : 80070002 . Its the
first update in the list then everything worked fine so I am not sure
exactly what is going on. Anyone have any ideas?

Hello Michael,

It's an update for the software that controls Windows Update itself.
Without it, you wouldn't be able to use Windows Update. Windows Update
always checks to see that it is using the latest version required by the
update server.

Hello Jane,

i found this information by myself, checking the windows directories.
But the point is that i didn't allow the update (automatic update properties
on "notify") and there is no information about this update on Microsoft
webpages.

But can you (as MVP) explain, why Microsoft didn't publish any information
about this update?

Frank

A recent update change the default setting, maybe?

MVP's are not necessarily privy to this thought process information of the
Microsoft developers anymore than you are. (-:

My guess is that it is an update to the mechanism that performs the Windows
Update so it was mandatory, and not able to be denied installation.

Again, this is only my take on it!

I dual boot XP and Vista, normally I only use XP but I want to keep a
eye on Vista too as I study computer science and maybe have to wor
with it.

I use "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download an
install them".

Anyway, in early August ,Windows silently installed 7.0.6000.374 (
didn't notice this, might have installed at login screen and then
rebooted and started xp) , and today Windows silently installe
7.0.6000.381. After that, my Vista is no longer activated. Has bee
activated since March, I have no idea what is wrong. I don't want t
spend hours on a phone so I might try a re-install.

In my eyes, MS use this silent install to hit at illegal copies o
Vista. Unfortunately some legitimate users also are hit. :/

I'm quite disappointed actually. Not that MS tries to prevent Vist
from illegal copying, but I _am_ disappointed that 2 updates obviousl
were installed behind my back! *"Check for updates but let m
_choose_"*, to me that means I should be asked if I wanted this instal
or not
