Hi,
I can't use windows update in the help and support section of windows xp
proff.
When using that feature it checks my connection (no problem because I can get
on the web) then it says "connecting" but there it hangs, nothing happens.
Windows itself still functions.
I don't get an error or something, is there a way to view a log of the
trying to
connect and how maybe there's an error code there.

I have windows xp proffessional sp2, I searched the web but couldn't find
help, updating from the website works.
Please help me solving this issue,

thanks in advance

Symtex,

See if this KB article helps resolve the issue :

Help and Support Center Does Not Automatically Connect to the Internet
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315955

I find it a bit confusing since I'm on broadband with no dial up
connection established. If you're in the same boat, suggest going to
Internet Options via the Control Panel. Click the Connections tab.
Is there a Dial-up connection listed in the " Dial-up and Virtual
Private Network settings " window ? If so, make sure that " Never dial a
connection " has a mark next to it. If you changed anything here, click
Apply, then OK to make the change stick.

Hi there,

I believe this article has nothing to do with me, I get no error code in
help and support windows update center of windows xp,

I only see "connecting" and that stays that way while I'm always on the
internet
(broadband).
I have no dial-up connection listed in dial-up and virtual connection.
I use wireless internet connection.

In Networkconnections I see 3 types connections:
Lan-connection (with a red cross), but when I want to disable/diconnect it
I get a message : "you cannot disconnect this connection, this can be the
cause
of that this connections one or more protocols without Plug and play support
uses or
are initialised by another user or systemaccount.
I believe it is the connection you can use for wired lan.
I am the only user of this computer and my computershop installed windows on
this
new pc.

The second connection is the wireless connection (the one I really uses)
The third is 1394 Connection, I have no idea what it is.

My Pc uses windows windows xp proff+sp2 oem version genuine version.
But I don't know if it has been activated but it should be the key sticker is
sticked on my pc.
I have Intel Pentium D (3.0 ghz) Intel 945 motherboard,
2 giga ram, Linksys wireless networkcard + wireless G router

I believe the router has nothing to do with it because my old pc has the
same networkcard and uses the same router and that one can connect
to the help and support windows update center.

Symtex,

Can the system with this issue successfully update via the shortcut on
the Start Menu or from clicking Tools, Windows Update from within
Internet Explorer ? That is the *crucial* aspect of this.
If the answer is yes to either question, then why even bother doing
updates from Help & Support ?

For further clues as to what the issue may be, check the
WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory. Look for an error
code associated with the failed attempt to update, then go to the
Windows Update Troubleshooter via Windows Update site from the Get help
and support link in the left frame, then click the Try solving your
problem with the Troubleshooter link in the right frame.
Input the specific error code where it says Type keywords here or
manually search the pages.
