hi, i'm looking for some advice,

windows update has completely stopped working for me. The page loads, the
browser status bar shows "Done" - but the page stays at:

"Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website…" - and does nothing.

so I installed baseline security analyzer to check things out. When it
first opens, under the scan section it shows my computer name as "\*error*"
- I enter it manually or enter the IP address and hit scan - it returns and
says "Computer not found"

I'm running XP pro, sp-3....

Any advice where to start to get scanning or updating my computer please?

Thanks a lot,
th

You may be seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
