I am running XP pro SP1
I think one of the recent updates that ive downloaded has crashed windows
update.

I get as far as selecting the update and a window pops up saying preparing
to download and then changes to downloading. Sometimes it hangs on preparing
and sometimes on downloading.

Ive tried clearing my temp internet files, history, passwords, cookies and
SSL - this made no diffrence. Ive tried clearing the download directory from
SoftwareDistribution folder.

Someone suggested repairing/re-installing IE6, this seemed to work, I was
presented with 18 updates (all the old security fixes for IE that were
overwritten) these downloaded and installed.

The machine reboots after the updates, and now I get the same problem.

Also the automatic updates icon on the taskbar doesnt pop up any more. Ive
stopped automatic updates, rebooted, switch automatic updates back on - icon
appears again - but is stuck on 0%

HELP its driving me nuts !

Hi When I try to play online game - Condition Zero - I keep getting a Run
Time Error message and the computer blocks - I have just tried to run the
Critical Updates and am having the same problem with downloading / installing
the XP Service Pack 2 as mentioned in your mail - I`ve also noticed that
between Sept 17th and today October 8th there have been no automatic updates
added to my computer whatsoever.

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

I've had this same problem now for about a month. I've
tried various things on this forum with no luck. I figure
MS will figure out it's a real problem sooner or later
and fix it. Until then I'm just going to use WU to locate
what I need and then go to the MS Site and download and
install the update manually. At this point it's all can
do. If I keep "tweeking" things, I'll really hose things
up!
Just for comparison sake, what do you have on your
machine?
I have:
AOL broadband 9.0 SE using cable internet
Norton Inernet Security 2004
XP SP2

Good luck,
Joe

Unable to download updates or there is an error message
Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 wintrust.dll

If you're using AOL to download updates - try IE instead.

Taurarian,

Except for this last comment I think that this answer may be more
appropriate for the OP than for Joe. OP probably doesn't have WU v5.
Joe does (becauses he has XPsp2). In fact, I suspect they are both
looking at two significantly different symptoms but neither describing
them well. (God only knows what made the third poster add to this
thread.)

Joe,

Check your WindowsUpdate.log for clues. Your description so far
doesn't indicate any particular problem, just your observations that
AU isn't doing anything, which seems to be OK because it hasn't been
given anything to do yet for XPsp2 users.

If you like you can doublecheck what files it changes in the
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution directory. Search for my posts
which refer to both that directory and FileMon for more ideas
on how to do this checking.

Robert,
Thanks for the reply. I'll try to describe this one more
time. I have done so several times in this forum which is
why I've pretty much given up. Yes, I do have WU V5 but it
was installed by WU V4 just before SP2 became available.
In fact, I had to install SP2 from CD because of WU V5
being useless. So as far as I'm concerned WU V5 is the
problem. I have read several similar posts on this forum
but nobody to my knowledge has given a successful
solution. I've looked at WindowsUpdate log but it pretty
much just stops at the download like WU V5 does. That's
what makes this difficult. I don't get an error.
The "downloading and installing" window just sits there
when I select a update to install. I have to end task then
in order to even get a list of updates again, I first have
to reboot with AU stopped and manual, delete the
SoftwareDistribution folder, then set AU back to automatic
and reboot again. I really don't have time for this (not
many people do). I really wished I would get an error code
or something to go on here.
Thanks again,
Joe

You're confirming my suspicion that you don't have a problem.

I think you stopped reading my reply too soon.

If you don't want to analyse what is being downloaded into
the SoftwareDistribution directory but you really want to see
WUv5 do something you could try uninstalling XPsp2... <VBG>

Agreed, starting to get a little confused these days between WUv5 and WUv4
Two posts two different problems, same thread.

The only thing was posted here that made it better was to rewind from WU5
back to WU4.
