Hello, i've just come back from a 4 month job in the US and for some reason,
windows update doesnt work for me anymore. Here is a copy of the message i
get:

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that
these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started.

---
I've followed and done these and it still doesnt solve the problem. I tried
asking microsoft directly but as usual got no reply to my emails to technical
services and the phones are a joke anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Just go to your new Security Center (in the Control Panel) and turn on
Automatic Updates. Then manually do the update. Then shut off Automatic
Updates. If you are a power user, you can then go to your services and shut
off Automatic Updates there (set to Manual) and BITS (also manual). Just
remember to turn them all back on whenever you want to update Windoze.

Can't wait for that little utility that someone will write that does all
that crap for you.

I followed troubleshooter directions & tried other technical suggestions on
how to get past 0x80240030, but this is the only one that worked for me.
Strange, every time I need help, it's the simple solutions that do the job.
Interesting, I already had Automatic Updates ON, but clicked it off and on
again, and bingo. Thanks ccrashh!

Could someone explain just what this (BITS) provides that FTP calls (present
since Win3.1) does not provide?

That's only because you don't have a $10,000/month service contract with
them. If you had one of those, you would only wait on the phone 5 minutes
to get "we cannot help you" instead of two plus hours.
