Windows Update - switches from automatic to off

Each time that my computer is shutdown or restarted the windows automatic
update is turned off. If I go into the control panel/windows
security/automatic updates and set it back to automatic it will remain in
this state until the next shutdown. My operating system is Windows XP home
edition - service pack 2.

Based on reports in this newsgroup over the past few months, this is likely to
be caused by a malware infestation. See the thread titled "0x8ddd0018(Vundo
Malware)" for advice on how to proceed.
