Windows Update takes forever to install, then sometimes freezes at

My computer is running Windows ME. When I try to do updates, they download
fine, but the install takes forever for the blue line to go across, and then
sometimes, not always, the machine freezes at the end when it looks like it
has gotten to the end. I disabled my virus coverage to see if that was it,
but didn't make a difference.
