Windows Update takes forever

For some reason windows update takes forever to scan my laptop. Windows
2000, SP4. Pentium 3 mobile 1.133 MHz, 256 MB RAM. I also have Office 2003
and S&T 2002. That's not a whole lot of MS software yet it takes literally
8 minutes to scan. Is this normal? Any help is appreciated.
