Hi,

I don't know what happened, but about 2 days ago, I got this error
message while trying to scan for update using Help and Support.

- please click on links to see error messages -

This is the first error message I got -- [image 1]
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5749/001ck5.jpg -- I went to the
Microsoft page listed, and did the things said on the page, but the
thing is that I can go to Windows Update using Internet Explorer.

Now I'm getting this one -- [image 2]
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/1797/002nv4.jpg -- but I am
connected to the Internet (otherwise how am I would I post this?) and
when I click Connect, I get this message -- [image 3]
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/1127/003jb6.jpg -- but after I
clicking it, it takes me back to the previous window -- [images 3].

Any ideas on what might be causing this and how it can be fixed?

Thanks,

Sterling

Help and Support thinks you're on a LAN and times out too quickly
because you're not? WMP does the same thing occasionally.
I would try to find something else which the same application will try
which also requires an Internet connection. If that works try the problem
procedure again.

Have you tried using IE itself to use WU? E.g. Alt-T,U
Or can you use Automatic Updates instead?

Hi Robert,

Yeah I had that problem with WMP just recently.

I'm on a LAN and hadn't had this problem before. I think what might've
happened was the my browser was offline (I don't know how since I
didn't putting it that way), but my DSL Help software said it was and
now Help and Support doesn't see IE as being "online"?

IE and UA work fine, but sometimes I don't want to open the former
(though it's be default browser) but I sometimes check manually (in
regards to the latter)

Don't misinterpret that message. There should really be a question mark
after it because what it is really saying is: IE can't detect an Internet connection
(e.g. as if you were using dial-up but your connections settings say
to use Never dial... because you want to dial manually and this time
your forgot to); so "[Would you like to] Work Offline [or] Retry[?]"
If you were using dial-up this would give you the opportunity to
do the manual connection that you forgot to do and then click Retry.
If you were using DSL (e.g. with PPPoE) the connection by then
may already have been made so you could just click Retry.

Hi,

I'm not sure what you mean Robert :-( Click "Reply" where? I mean, I
turn on my PC and open my browser (IE6) and I'm online.

I think I might've found the problem. Help and Support, after running
some scan of my PC (which know I can't remember how I found it), said
that my Network Adapter failed. I found something about it on
microsoft.com
[http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...bleshoot.mspx],
but don't know how to fix it.

I guess I'm going to have to either open IE or click on Windows Update
in All Programs (I have AU on though, but sometimes I check manually
for updates)

Thanks,

Sterling
