My RC-1 Vista windows update is constantly telling me that it's found the new
video driver for my NVIDIA mobile card in my compaq Presario R3000:
NVIDIA - display - NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go 64M

Download size: 19.4 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Recommended

Driver Update for Vista device support

More information:
http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=9913795

More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=hub

However, whenever I try and install it fails with the code 80070002.
Following the guidance in the help links (stop update service, remove files
in download and software update/datastore folders, restart update service) do
not solve the problem.

Anyone figured out the magic hand-sign to allow the driver to actually
install? Using the default VGA adapater with the NVIDIA card is harsh on the
eyes when using Office B2TR Outlook - -it's all fuzzy when displaying the
text.

I would never try to update a video driver unless I was currently having
video problems. Why try to fix something when it is not broken?

It's broken. As I said at the bottom of my post, the current driver doesn't
display clearly at all.

text is blurred slightly - just enough to give someone a headache.

Why not go to the manufacturer's site and download the driver that you want
there.
Most recommend the manufacturer's site anyway.

Unfortunately, the driver download that the manufacturer has posted errors
out with a message "cannot find the required drivers for your hardware" when
it tries to actually install.

or put another way, trying to get them from the manufacturer doesn't work
either.

I was hopeful that HP would be doing something to support users of their
hardware but no joy around Vista RC1 on their site yet.

Who is the manufacturer of the adapter ? Does HP have a beta driver
available ?
Remember, you're testing a beta driver release on a beta OS.
I got a beta driver to install and now can't remove it.
Go figure

That may be a symptom of a "ClearType" setting problem.
It is a new default for IE7 but it may not be appropriate
for all monitors.

You can change it for IE7-only in Options, Advanced, Browsing section
In XPsp2 you can change it using Display Properties, Appearance tab,
Effects dialog: Use the following method to smooth the edges of screen fonts:

Yikes. I just got a reminder of why I turned it off. YMMV.

Apparently there is a ClearType tuning tool you can download
if you do decide to leave it enabled but still aren't satisfied
with the appearance of some text. (Perhaps I should try it? <w>)

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/...ePowerToy.mspx

(MSN search for
cleartype tuning download site:microsoft.com
)

BTW I'm cross-posting this information to Vista General
because I don't know how applicable it is to your OS.

Good luck
