Windows Update under Vista hangs when downloading updates

System: Intel Core2 Duo Extreme processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD SATA2-300.
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 NL

Problem:

Since a few weeks, my updates won't download any more.
Windows Update returns error code 80246008.
It seems that my update session hangs when he wants to start downloading the
updates.

I also noticed that the BITS service won't start anymore: error 2, can't
find the specified file

The C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.lo g says every time:
"Windows Update Client successfully detected 24 updates - error 0", followed
by
"Error: Download failed - error 80246008"

Been there trying to disable and enable windows and microsoft update again,
done checking the network folder part, but no luck.

Anyone any bright ideas, before I'll give the Microsoft PSS another try?

Thx a lot,

MorSe

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
the Microsoft Update Web site

When following that article, I stumble over the registration of the
qmgr.dll, the qmgrprxy.dll succeeds.
The error:
"qmgr.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
The file cannot be registered"

a version check and SFC on that file are both positive...

i find this as a very common issue on the internet, but persistently without
solution...

can you help?...

thx,

MorSe

Could mean the file is corrupt or you have more than one file on the computer.

Try specifying the full path:
regsvr32 %windir%\System32/qmgr.dll

Adjust if necessary for Vista

It appears your problem is with BITS, unfortunately I don't know enough about Vista to go
any further.
Perhaps contact MS.

The DLL Help Database apparently has not been updated with any information for Vista yet.

The latest version of qmgr.dll listed there is for W2003Ssp1
and it shows that it does contain the necessary entrypoint:

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp...133&l=55&det=1

You could try using DependencyWalker (assuming it still works under Vista)
to see if your version has that entrypoint or not. If it does you could use
DependencyWalker's Profile command to trace the execution of the regsvr32.exe
command with gmgr.dll as an operand.

Alternatively does Vista have a version of bitsadmin that works with it?
Then you could use (e.g. in a cmd window):

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

Cross-posting to a Vista specific NG in case someone there who is more
familiar with these details may be willing to help you further.

Good luck

Hello,

according to dependency walker, there -is- no DllRegisterServer function...
i also get an error in the profiler:
"00:00:01.685: GetProcAddress(0x000007FEF2CD0000
[c:\windows\system32\QMGR.DLL], "DllRegisterServer") called from
"c:\windows\system32\REGSVR32.EXE" at address 0x00000000FF5323DF and
returned NULL by thread 1. Error: Kan opgegeven procedure niet vinden
(127)."
(the last part is something like: cannot find the specified procedure

maybe it's best to follow TaurArian's advice and contact microsoft PSS?

thx a lot,

Serge

Solution:
insert windows dvd and choose 'upgrade'
the broken bits service is then fixed...
