Windows Update Unknown Problem

Hi,

I have Windows XP Home, I have tried to update windows on several occasions,
but with no success. I have deactivated the firewall and the popup blocker,
made my internet security the default level and made Microsoft a trusted site.

The problem occurs when I get to the downloading updates screen. It does
nothing for hours on end, and when I cancel it IExplorer crashes. Sometimes
IExplorer crashes at the checking for updates screen. I have had a recent
problem with IExplorer crashes caused by mshtml.dll which I hadn't managed to
resolve which may be the same issue.

I have looked through some of the other posts, and tried a few things such
as running regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL and registering some other DLL files that are
a fix for some other problems with no success.

Can anyone please advise?

Windows 2000 the same problem.
