Windows Update, update failure

I made the mistake of choosing to update the Windows Update software. After
updating, the update site indicated that I needed to update several
components of the software. (Why it wasn't part of the Update update is
beyond me, other than we're dealing with Microsoft.) The update to the
components failed. Microsoft wants to charge me $35 per hour to fix their
problem. Specifically, the two components that failed to update were winHTTP
and BITS. I've tried rebooting, etc, but nothing seems to work. Without
these updates, Windows Update doesn't work. Has anyone else found a solution
to this problem?

Please post the contents of C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log and
C:\windows\KB842773.log
That will indicate the error

I don't have a solution yet, but update installed corrupted for me as well.
I figure the best thing to do is uninstall it and try again.
Just need a safe way of doing it. Let me know.
